Nurture The Spirit – Tips on Finding Multidimensional Bliss

Americans will spend well over $50 billion dollars this year on everything from teeth whitening to cosmetic treatments to look their best. Now, I would be one of the last people to say this is not money well spent, as I’ve spent many years as a salon and wellness spa owner and am a daily witness to the wonderful effects of great treatments and a bit of indulgence.

I also believe that balance needs be a part of life that physicality and spirituality are truly the two sides of our coin. So, every autumn and spring, we offer a complementary spiritual growth workshop. Available on a first come first serve basis, it’s a way of tapping into deeper aspects of living. As I’ve previously reported in these pages, I have few doubts about the roots of our success at A.F. Bennett Wellness Spa. “All of these things,” I’ve said, “would not be possible without God’s grace.”

Our bodies are a temple for our spirit, but it’s easy to focus on the former and forget the latter. We need to pay careful attention to this delicate thing that lives inside us. Here are some practical tips you can apply immediately that will help nurture and enliven that incredible life force.

First: Spend some time every day quietly in meditation. Its benefits are far too numerous to list here, but, according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services), the list begins with meditation having “been shown to relieve anxiety, stress, fatigue, and general mood and sleep disturbances,” adding that, “there is some evidence that it may reduce blood pressure and may be helpful in reducing common menopausal symptoms.” It also, of course, plugs you into the eternal.

Second: Keep the Golden Rule in mind in everything you do: “Do to others as you would have them do unto you.”

Third: Nurture a generous heart. You will simply be amazed by how much more abundant life becomes when you give without reservation whether time, resources, or love.

Fourth: Forgive, and quickly. I’m firm in the belief that grudge holding eats you alive, and research has shown that those who forgive quickly are able to have richer personal experiences.

Fifth: Remember “GIGO,” or “garbage in, garbage out.” We do real damage when we subject ourselves to disturbing stimulus, whether bad media, bad company, or bad food or drink. Gossip, backbiting, or needless disputes in the physical or social media worlds will leave marks on that beautiful spirit of yours. Also, take care in choosing those you surround yourself with. Last: Love, and love hard! Peace, love, and light.

The Art Of Giving

This year, consider skipping the next generation of tech gear and give a truer piece of yourself.

It’s no wonder that given the range of choices we have as far as sharing holiday cheer is concerned—and particularly given the onslaught of technology that seems to determine so much of giftgiving—people are turning back the hands of time to a simpler age when right now and everything were the province of the super wealthy only, or at least just the super-vain. Because the finest gifts, after all, simply need to be heartfelt, tailored to actual needs and desires, and ideally, memorable. This won’t necessarily narrow your choices substantially, but it should make imagining them more pleasurable. What about a special trip that your special someone has been wanting but either can’t afford or hasn’t had time to flesh out? A one-day racing course? A ride in a fighter jet? A week of cooking lessons? On a somewhat lesser financial scale, what about a shorter trip (of sorts)—a day at the spa alone or with someone else, or perhaps even a spa gift to a small group of loved ones or business associates? In a day and age of living our lives for and through just about anyone but ourselves—and as often as not through a social media prism—people have a real and actually quite concerning deficit of simple touch. The lack of physical interaction seems to be particularly acute among men, owing to anxiety surrounding any sort of platonic touch being misinterpreted as either an unwanted advance or an admission of vulnerability…or both.

I can personally vouch for this, as we have seen a recent uptick in spa day gift cards the likes of which we have never seen before. The reasons why treatments and particularly massages are gaining popularity are numerous, but include the fact that simple touch will almost instantly reduce anxiety, blood pressure, improve one’s general outlook, and provide a brand of sensory input that no amount of texting can begin to approximate. Whatever gift you choose, just be certain it comes from an abundance of love, concern, and understanding. Have a Blessed Holiday.

How To Look Natural Yet Captivating On Your Wedding Day

I think nearly every little girl dreams of her wedding day. From the tween years, or perhaps even sooner, visions of a white dress and a delicate veil float in our heads. At least, that was the truth for me!

I had a scrapbook of magazine clippings, print-outs from online, and several of my own doodles. I imagined myself in an elaborate Cinderella dress surrounded by adorable flower girls. The venue I supposed would be a lush garden festooned with ginormous bouquets and topiaries. My Prince Charming would, of course, agree to ever fantastical idea and grant my every wish!

Over the years, my ideas changed, and my sense of style swung from lavish and elaborate to simple and minimalist. I wanted to look natural on my wedding day. I wanted it to seem like my apparel, hairstyle and make-up were simply highlighting my beauty, not creating something that wasn’t there in the first place. I wanted to feel light and carefree. If I felt like dancing all night, I wanted the liberty to do so, without worrying that I would ruin my make-up or hairdo.

The Modern Trend

The current trend of style follows this line of thought as well. When once it was popular to go through great pains to be pretty—think corsets and foot binding! Ugh! —

Today’s woman has cast off such torturous rituals. Many of today’s brides embrace the chance to look natural. We believe that it is possible to be both cute and comfortable, poised and practical.

Natural Doesn’t Mean Neglect

However, the goal to look natural, doesn’t mean that a modern bride should neglect her hairstyle and make-up. In fact, it takes skill, time and attention to achieve that “I woke up this way” look. Great care must be taken to choose a color palette and hairstyle that complement and augment the bride’s skin tone, eye color and facial contours. For me, one my wedding day, I choose delicate curls in a short pixie cut, highlighted with subtle bronzing on my cheeks and a light rouge on my lips.

When I choose my style, I was mindful that wedding photos last a lifetime. Although we enjoy the moments many photos, we can sometimes regret the old-fashioned styles. On the other hand, the “natural look” is timeless. For my wedding, I wanted photos that I would happily look back on again and again without laughing at the “dated” style. By choosing to look natural I achieved that goal.

Styles will come and go. Undoubtedly, the styles we dreamed of as little girls are not what is fashionable today. However, all of us can style achieve our girlhood fantasies on our wedding day. “Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue, A Sixpence In Your Shoe.”

If you are already married and had a traditional wedding, or are planning a wedding, you most likely heard this popular wedding rhyme. Many brides, when they learn this verse, routinely try to follow it’s instructions without much thought as to why or without any idea what to include? If you are going to follow this tradition, then it would be worth considering its origin and put more earnest thought into picking out the items listed. So, what is the origination of this rhyme and what does it mean?

This is an old English 17th century superstitious saying, which if implemented by the bride, supposedly warded off infertility, promised marital bliss, and assured wealth and prosperity. 400 years later, it has become nothing more than an innocuous charming tradition. There is no guarantee of any of the silly claims, but it is fun to observe and a romantic addition to the ceremony. Of course, today you could apply your own sentimental meaning to each directive.

The following is the traditional contemporary meaning of each phrase and included are a few ideas of items you can collect.

Something Old

Today this represents continuity – an unbroken connection to the past. Something old can be passed down from an older relative or parent. You can even include something that honors or remembers a deceased relative or family friend. Some ideas are:

· A family heirloom

· An article of clothing worn by grandmother

· Older relatives’ jewelry, pearls, a charm

· A watch or clock

· I personally like your grandmother’s or mother’s bridal veil

· A vintage wedding dress is also chic

· Any vintage accessory

· An antique

Something New

Weddings represent new beginnings and a new life. “Something new” brings optimism for the future. Anything new and fresh will embody this notion. Some ideas include:

· Of course, the wedding dress and shoes

· Wedding rings

· Key ring with the new house keys

· Jewelry

The ideas for this could be endless.

Something Borrowed

This should not be borrowed from just anybody, it should be borrowed from a happily married couple. The idea is to pass their good fortune and success in marriage on to you.

· Again, the veil is the most popular item that fulfills every theme – borrow a happily married woman’s previously worn wedding veil!

· Borrow lace or beadings from her wedding dress

· Borrow her jewelry

· Borrow a happily married couples wedding vows

This list can also be endless

Something Blue

The color blue represents so many admirable virtues and aspirations that are necessary for a good marriage – that of love, purity, fidelity, loyalty, wisdom, trust, faith, and strength. Blue also symbolizes heaven and the imagination. So, this imperative is worthy to keep. Clever ways you can add blue are:

· Blue accent on wedding dress – a sash, beading, flower, sequins etc.

· Blue flowers in bouquet

· Blue bridesmaids dresses and groomsmen ties or solo groom tie

· Blue wedding shoes

· Blue gemstones in jewelry such as: topaz, aquamarine, jade, sapphire, etc.

A sixpence in your shoe

The final instruction, a sixpence in your shoe, may seem more byzantine than it really is. Simply put, it’s just saying, put some form of currency in your shoe. A “sixpence” was a 17th century sterling silver coin used for monetary exchange at time. It was also considered a dowry for the groom. When the bride followed this ritual, it was supposed to bring prosperity and wealth. Today, the sixpence is no longer used in money exchange and so now it is a collector’s item. The modern bride can put any coin in her shoe or taped to the bottom of it to fulfill this directive. However, if she wants to be creative, she can use dollar bills or find a genuine sixpence coin. You can them order one online.

Again, this tradition is not compulsory or required to include in any wedding ceremony, but it is just an amusing sentimental customary practice. Don’t expect the rewards but do it for the symbolic representations behind the gestures.

A Modest And Simple Sweet Sixteen – No Need To Be Pressured By Society And Tradition

The pressure is on because you want to give your daughter a sweet sixteen to remember, but you don’t have the $6,000 to $10,000-dollar average budget for the kind of sweet sixteen bash so often propagated by reality shows like My Super Sweet Sixteen.

But why does a sweet sixteen party have to cost almost the same amount usually allotted for a wedding reception? It doesn’t.

Turning sixteen is a momentous occasion and cause for celebration and should be a recognition of your daughter coming of age. But you shouldn’t have to break the bank to commemorate it. You can make sweet sixteen memories without spending thousands of dollars.

First of all, you don’t have to have a massive wedding reception like party. You can do a small intimate party with her closest friends. The whole school doesn’t need to be invited and she will appreciate it just the same, as long as you show her you care and take creative effort to make her day special.

Take lots of pictures for her to share on social media and with friends at school.

Besides, a sweet sixteen is a celebration of maturity and transitioning to adulthood. It should not be an exercise in futility and unnecessary extravagance. You need to think of your motives and what message you want to send to your daughter. The exorbitant sweet sixteen parties depicted on television and reality TV are excessive and unrealistic. They also perpetuate the self- centered, vain, entitled, and shallow image of many during our social media age. We want to teach our daughters differently. We want them to be grateful, humble, altruistic, sacrificial, and contented young ladies.

The following are some ideas to foster these noble and admirable virtues.

1. Plan for your daughter and a few of her friends to volunteer at a favorite charity or service that helps the underprivileged such as a teen pregnancy crisis center, a soup kitchen, the Boys and Girls Club, a nursing home, or visit a children’s hospital or wing. After wards get dressed up and go celebrate at her favorite restaurant.

2. Plan a house party and request that guests give monetary gifts and ask that a percentage be donated to your daughter’s favorite charity. If your daughter isn’t shy, encourage her to make a two-minute presentation for her charity at the party.

3. Buy party favors and gifts for your guests. Plan sweet sixteen party games, such as guessing your daughters’ favorite things, and give out gifts to the winners.

4. Do a spa day for her and a few of her closest friends. Let them get their hair and nails done. If you can afford it, throw in a massage.

5. Have a pink pajama slumber party and let the girls watch your daughter’s favorite romcom movie.

There are so many unique ways to honor your daughter’s sweet sixteen birthday. Break the mold. Don’t be pressured by society and tradition.

Use this as opportunity for her to understand the responsibility of adulthood and yet make her day exciting and memorable. These are just suggestions that you can use and add to make it your own. Get her input and involvement too. See what she likes and wants. Let her understand that although it is her day, she should think about others as well. She should also understand that you do have a budget and you both can come up with ideas of how to make the best use of the funds.

Salt Of The Earth

How many times have we heard this expression, and where did it come from?

When we hear salt of the earth we usually equate it to somebody who is really down to earth, pretty real, and some sort of kind humanitarian.
This is very true, and we can all benefit from being just a little bit saltier and loving while we dwell on this planet earth.

This new year many thoughts of been going through my mind about Wellness, weight management, and just overall feeling good.
In the midst of so many people getting all the different types of common colds, viruses and flu symptoms, I got to thinking
what can I do for the people in my circle of influence?
Seems like the key catchphrases these days are keto this keto that, and detox this, and detox that.

I couldn’t agree more, since Biblical times people have been using Salt and fasting in order to reset their bodies, and get rid of all that bad stuff that gunks up the works. Who would’ve thunk?

Here are some things I recommend very highly this time of year, After a whole month of overindulgence a good body detox from the inside out is in order.

Three steps that will help craft your summer body

Nothing fits!

Here we go again…

It’s May, and you pull out last summer’s best because you just endured our first 85-degree day. You grab those skimpy yet too-cool shorts, and realize that life feels different. What you forgot is that the last five months have been an adventure in indulging in favorite foods, and wearing comfy clothes that seemed to make you look good…no mater what.

Fast forward to Memorial Day, and what to do?

Here’s a little plan we’ve been advising our guests at the Spa to embrace, with great results.

For starters, a quick detox: Spend 24 hours doing what countless millions worldwide have done for centuries—simply shut your mouth and fast for a whole day. Fasting will give your organs a chance to rest while you drink cleansing lemon-infused water instead of food. When you do this, just for this one day, you will find, incredibly, that your belly will flatten somewhat. It’s just lost water, reduced bloat, but it’s a terrifically encouraging start.

With that jump-start on a new summer body, the next step is to eliminate easy-to-get-rid-of sugars. Nix things like sugary soda, fruit juices, even sugar in your coffee; this’ll be good for one pants size in short order.

There’s just something about coming home after a long day and kicking off shoes that have been binding your feet all day. When I really want to get into my wife’s good graces after a hard day at work, I wait for her to walk in the door, greet her with a kiss, and have her take a hot shower while I prepare dinner. After we finish eating, I’ll escort her to the living room to her favorite chair, then gently start rubbing her feet, making certain that I hit all the spots that cause her to completely de-stress and unwind.

Now, a reader will likely think, “Wow what a great guy,” and he or she would be right, of course, but I also wholeheartedly embrace the notion that “a happy wife makes for a happy life,” and there are hard facts to support me. A 2014 Rutgers University study published in the Journal of Marriage and Family found that even “men who are unhappily married may still be happy with their lives overall, as long as their wives are satisfied with their marriages.” (And it cuts the other way, too, Rutgers researchers found; an unhappy wife translates to a diminished life.)
And, lo and behold, my wife and other women have an alternative to waiting for their significant others to perform this foot rub ritual (but my advice is not to miss out on it if at all possible). Our spa is celebrating its 20th anniversary this month, and we are finding that more and more people are coming for our famous pedicures. And not just for their famed grooming properties, but also because of our expert nail technicians’ handiwork with foot and upper calf reflexology and their application of deep penetrating lotion.

So fellas, take it from me…go the extra rubbing mile, or pick up the phone and make your charge card do the talking by letting our pros take care of things.
I promise you’ll wind up being a champ either way.

“By The Grace Of God”

For two decades, this Staten Island salon and wellness spa has used the healing power of spiritualism in service to its community

A lot has changed in 20 years.

Frank and Anne Bennett have, over that time, not only grown a successful business and given back to their community, but also offered career opportunities via their collaboration with the Paul Mitchell Cosmetology School. Most important, they’ve also become a family, in more ways than one.

The couple, who opened the A.F. Bennett Salon and Wellness Spa on New Dorp Lane in 1998, had a son, and he’s now working alongside them at the salon and spa. And the family extends beyond these three; it includes their staff, some of whom have been with the business since the beginning.

“We’re a family operation I can say it from a genetic standpoint or a spiritual standpoint,” said Frank Bennett, who runs the company with Anne. “Some people are linked by blood, some are linked by A.F. Bennett. There’s something intangible here. I don’t know it’s the secret sauce,” he said with a laugh, searching for the right words. “It’s unlike other places. People ask, ‘Why don’t you open up all over?’ Honestly, I don’t know if I can replicate this, it’s something so special.”

It must be, as it’s lasted 20 years and shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, it’s growing. While he’s coy about the details, Bennett said that the business is expanding and will dedicate some newly acquired square footage to Sanctuary, a concept projected to launch next summer. “We blew people away in 1998. People are going to get blown away for a second time,” he teased.

But for now, reflecting on 20 years in the beauty and wellness field on Staten Island is sweet. “We went from being a married couple to a family. My son, Frankie, now works with us, shampooing and hosting. It feels like [the years] went very fast,” added the Todt Hill resident. “We’ve become such a staple in the community. I feel like we have become an integral part of Staten Island. It feels like it was fast, but also like we have been here forever.”

And forever is the plan. When the Bennetts opened the salon and spa, they were thinking in terms of legacy. “Everything we do is with the mindset of a future generation taking over,” he said.
So what’s the secret to being in operation for that length of time? Bennett explained that the key has been constantly innovating and presenting new treatments.

“Two times a year, we look to bring new services into the salon and spa. Every three to four years, we look to bring on one or two services that are revolutionary—that haven’t been seen on Staten Island before,” he said, detailing that they were the first to do hair extensions and eyelash extensions and, more recently, were the first to do micro blading.

“I go back in time and think of when we were first in hot stone massage, too. Now we do skin analysis with a computer and imaging equipment. We are always looking to break new ground.”

In terms of the neighbor – hood, Bennett said he has seen a shift on New Dorp Lane, from mostly retail in the 1990s to a variety of businesses today, like restaurants, beauty, and wellness. “We’ve seen a lot of people come and go on New Dorp Lane. It has become more of a service-based hub rather than a retail hub.”

The Bennetts also operate the Paul Mitchell Cosmetology School a few doors up the street, and recently celebrated 10 years there.

One of the things that keeps the salon and spa ahead of the pack is that it’s truly both, Bennett noted. “It’s a very unique situation…a place that has an equally busy salon and spa. When we say wellness spa, we’re speaking very deliberately; we make certain that what we do is well balanced. That balance may include bringing forth the newest hair color technique. Then we’re thinking, ‘What’s the newest in facials?’ If we do yin, we must do yang. That’s how we operate.”

“We do whatever we can to make sure people get great services,” Bennett said, “but more importantly, that we provide an experience. That’s why we’re here 20 years later,” adding that he also believes in investing in the community that has supported this vision. “Philanthropic efforts have always been at the forefront of our heart. We invest in the community and the community invests in us. When people are raising money for things that make Staten Island better, they know we’re enthusiastic about that.”

There’s no question that, at the two decade mark, Bennett has a grateful heart.
“All of this is by God’s grace,” he said. “We have so much evidence of God’s hand on our business.”

While the Bennetts’ dedication to their clientele, a commitment to excellence, and a thirst for innovation have propelled the business forward and contributed to their success, Bennett is clear about the roots of that success. “All of these things,” he said, “would not be possible without God’s grace.”

Every time a hairdresser puts a scissor to hair, he or she blunts its edges, and at times this can take away natural flow. Over the last three decades, industry pros have turned to using razors to avoid this seemingly inevitable result, but their use has its own problems; it tends to produce more split ends than the client had before she sat down. An alternative was needed, and we now have one, because the Calligraphy Cut has emerged as nothing less than a game changer.

This technique was invented in Europe by one of the most gifted practitioners of our time, Franz Brormann, and starts out with the selection of small sections of hair (known as bundles) strategically chosen for shape, flow, and overall end result, Each bundle is then cut with a pen like tool (hence the name) that cuts on a diagonal. Brormann told Modern Salon magazine that cutting flowers gave him the inspiration for the concept.

“I realized that if you cut in a perfect angle, you can increase the [flower’s surface area] nearly three times,” he said. “And if you can do that to flowers, why not with hair? It took me six years to develop the technique and to design the tool. The result: Hair that is beautiful, soft, and flexible, with natural movement…and the tool looks like a piece of art.”

Fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin tone, and a dull complexion can creep up on us as we age, even if we embrace a proper skincare regimen and a squeaky clean diet. Whether via exposure to sun or environmental pollutants, or simply because of genetics, the result is often not the desired you.

Micro-needling, though decades old, strikes many visitors to our spa as a breakthrough new weapon in addressing skin problems. A Better Balayage

This year’s hottest highlights technique gets a rethink.

Hair styles come and go– not quite with the same frequency of the seasons, but close enough. In just the past few years, we’ve seen and bid adieu (until they come again) to the pixie, the beehive…you get the idea.

Balayage highlights have been the range for quite a while now, and rightfully so, but interestingly, the change it’s experiencing at the moment isn’t an elimination as much as an evolution. A French word meaning “to sweep” or “to paint,” it allows, as Paul Edmonds hair salon colorist Jack Howard explained to Elle UK , “for a sun-kissed natural-looking hair color, similar to what nature gives us as children.” (As opposed to ombré, which is a seamless gradation from darker to lighter.)

Instead of being booted for some new color trend, today’s balayage is an interesting play on traditional highlights, mixed with an array of beginning and ending points of placement. Hand painted, they are still starting at the mid shaft of the hair, but at our salon, we incorporate soft micro wefts of shimmering lights that start closer to the scalp, in concert with the bold bolts of blonde or any other color the client requests. You can also expect softer warm ambers and gold hues in balayage to kick this season’s color pallet off.

NEW PROGRAM GIVES SALON OWNERS TOOLS TO COMBAT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

There’s a saying your hairdresser is also your therapist. In a place where you can let your hair down, relationships between hairstylists and their clients can grow into a very trusting one. Frank Bennett of A.F. Bennett says that’s the dynamic of salons.

“You put your hands on their shoulders, and say: ‘Hey are you having a good day? How you feeling? What is it? What’s going on?’ And you know, they’re usually pretty [forthcoming],” said Frank Bennett, owner of A.F. Bennett Salon in New Dorp.

It’s that relaxing environment where people tend to open up- even about problems at home.

That’s why the Mayor’s office to combat domestic violence and the Staten Island District Attorney’s office are launching a training program for beauty professionals. Salon owners and stylists like Bennett have a unique opportunity to build a bridge between domestic violence victims and resources at the Staten Island Family Justice Center.

“We see them as clear allies on the fight or to end domestic violence,” said Cecile Noel, Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office to Combat Domestic Violence. “Sometimes they are able to hear and see things that others might not. and we want to ensure they have the resources available so they can know where to refer and what to do when this happens.”

Two-hour sessions teach beauty professionals how to identify signs of abuse whether it’s physical, emotional, or psychological.

Instructors also help them understand why it’s difficult for many victims to simply leave a hurtful relationship.

They’re also provided the best practices to gently lead victims to the right resources. For example, they’re encouraged to offer supportive statements such as, “What will help you feel safer?” Rather than give victim blaming statements such as, “How can you love someone like that?”

“Hopefully we provide a result that breaks the cycle of intimate partner violence,” said Paul Capofari, Staten Island Chief Assistant District Attorney.

In New York City, there are about 230 calls to the domestic violence hotline everyday, which is more than 85,000 calls a year.

That’s a figure salon owners at Monday’s session say they believe. They say they’ve seen red flags from some of their customers over the years and wanted to be trained to offer help.

Being a part of the program, Bennett says he and his team feel empowered to be a line of defense for those who need support in an unhealthy and abusive relationship.

It’s no secret that today’s male wants to be attractive and appealing, no matter what age. Guys from all walks of life and social circles are seeing the value of taking good care of their bodies minds, and spirits.

Summer is here and it’s time to show off a part of the body that is nothing short of a miracle. Human skin not only has poetic powers for many, but plays a vital role in protecting the body against pathogens and water loss. It also provides insulation, temperature regulation, sensation (key to sensing and avoiding predators in our early days on the savannah), and the synthesis of vitamin D. It also is one of our very few organs that can regenerate itself (the other being the liver). As we age, skin becomes thinner, is more easily damaged, and experiences a reduced ability to heal. This is because of many reasons, really, including the fact that aging skin receives less blood flow and less glandular activity. Readers know of the vital importance of UV protection, but it’s also easy to forget other care essentials. Your mother was right, 8 glasses of water is great if you want to simply stay alive, but is also vital for skin. A study published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science in 2007 found that drinking 9.5 cups of water every day for four weeks altered skin density and thickness, and a University of Missouri- Columbia study showed that drinking just two cups increased blood flow to the skin. Lemon infused water will help additionally, as vitamin C stimulates collagen production. Collagen production, incidentally, is a pivotal factor in your skin’s regenerative ability. Though the exact mechanisms of UV skin damage are hotly debated among MDs, the sun’s ultraviolet spectrum certainly causes collagen breakdown, and likely inhibits both DNA repair and immune system function, and causes the formation of free radicals (healthy cells turned bad as a result of trauma). A visit to your favorite spa can’t always heal damage, but astounding new treatments seem to arise yearly; scrubs that refresh and expose new skin are a tried and true starter, but there are also methods of detoxification and reducing bloat, along a variety of skin rejuvenation serums. I am often reminded of how beautiful people are when I see incredible acts of heroism and courage in the face of all types of injustices in this world. At times like those, I’m reminded of the collage that is America—a natural, undefiled beauty often seen in our kaleidoscope of different faces.

I find it exciting when I see women and men alike want to put the best foot forward; many times, this begins with their face and the freedom to be themselves and show who they really are.

I’ve been watching a trend develop for the last two years: more women, particularly, are starting to embrace natural appearance when it comes to putting on morning makeup—choosing a simple look as they venture out into the world. The idea is not to hide who they are and erase features as much as to make the face look well rested, wherein the skin tone matches the rest of the body. It’s about celebrating an overall uncluttered beauty women have when they are at their best.

High School Students Hit Runway to Show Off Prom Fashions

Prom is just around the corner and some young ladies are already nailing down the perfect look.

A.F. Bennett Salon and Wellness Spa hosted its annual “Prom Runway Show” Monday night. High school students modeled the latest looks in fashion, hair and makeup during the free event.

For some, prom may still be a few months out, but the girls say it’s never too early to start preparing for the big night.

Notre Dame Academy student Jesse Correale said she attended the event “to get an idea of what you want to look like for prom, what your hair wants to look like, anything like that,” she said. “And, it’s awesome trying on these dresses.”

“It really gives them an idea of the different types of hairstyles, makeup, things that are taken directly from the runways,” added Frank Bennett of A.F. Bennett Salon & Spa.

Allison McGarvey, a student at St. Joseph Hill Academy, agreed.

“It’s really cool because you see hairdos before your actual prom so it’s like a little trial run,” she said.

Stylists say bright colors, red carpet glam and floral accents are some of this season’s top trends.

Diva for a Day at A.F. BENNETT Salon

A.F. Bennett is one of the Diva for a Day participating salons, and they couldn’t be more delighted to team up with such a wonderful foundation. “The experience has been breathtaking,” says A.F. Bennett owner Frank Bennett. “Cancer can make a woman feel robbed of her beauty physically and outwardly, but it can also rob her of her inner beauty as well. We get the chance to turn that around and make her feel beautiful both inside and out. To take their spirits and heighten them to feel beautiful again – it’s priceless.”

For a woman battling cancer, a day at the spa is probably the last thing on her mind. But it might be the break she needs, if just for a day.

That’s why Debbie Sestokas and Peggy Matzen started the Diva for a Day Foundation, a program that works with individual salons to sponsor a full day of spa pampering for women who need it most, free of charge. Each “Diva” receives the royal treatment on her special day, complete with the works: a manicure, pedicure, facial, massage, blow-out, and make-up application. Divas are even greeted with a fresh bouquet of flowers and a photographer to commemorate the occasion.

Debbie and Peggy are cancer survivors themselves, so their compassion for these women is deep-rooted. “When someone is dealing with cancer, it is so all-consuming,” Debbie says. “We wanted to give these women a little escape from it all; a day to forget about doctors’ appointments and treatments, a day to feel specials.”

The Maya Angelou quote scrawled atop their website seems to sums it up well: “Be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud.”

A rainbow indeed. In the six years since hosting its very first Diva in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, the organization has managed to partner with over 50 salons nationwide and helped to brighten the day of over 600 Divas thus far (and counting). According to Peggy, when a request is made for a Diva in a new location, the foundation will make an effort to seek out nearby salons willing to sponsor her – an undertaking which has helped them cater to women with cancer in 26 states to date.

Peggy says the number of nominated Divas in Staten Island is high, where word seemed to spread quickly about the foundation and the generosity of its partnering salons. The Island accommodates more Divas than any single town, where there are three participating salons thus far.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Sometimes, in endless months of suffering, a day’s respite from the pain is all you need. For scores of Staten Island women battling cancer, Diva for Day has been exactly what the doctor ordered.

Founded by two women in New Jersey following their experience with breast cancer, the non-profit 501c3 organization arranges this day of pampering and relaxation at a local spa for women dealing with cancer diagnosis, treatment or recovery.

The nationwide program, now in 26 states, as far as Hawaii and California, is now 5 years old and was brought to Staten Island by Cathy Tantillo of Huguenot, who met the founders and was able to bring the vendors on board.

Soon she recruited the help of her lifelong friend, Great Kills resident, Christina Swiderski, to help run this incredible program on Staten Island.

“I have been salon coordinator for Staten Island since May 2013 and so far we have hosted 49 happy divas and am amazed at the strength and beauty of each and every one of them,” said Christina. “I am encouraged to keep this going on Staten Island by the results of one day at the spa after months of suffering through surgery and treatments.

“The ladies are all so grateful but also are moved, some to tears, because it’s the first time they actually saw ‘themselves’ in the mirror, when they see the strong, beautiful, and unbreakable women they have always been.

“This is not about lipstick. Diva for a Day is an emotional re-connection for women. It helps them to reconnect their mind, body and spirit. I cannot think of a better way for them to step toward recovery. They take the time to forget, if only for that day, what they have endured for months and experience pain-free, gentle human touch.”

On Staten Island, there are two participating spas: AF Bennett on New Dorp Lane and Mancini-Giuffre on Page Avenue. Each month Christine arranges for two women to go to these salons and enjoy treatments, including facials, massages, manicures, pedicures, shampoos and stylings of hair or wigs. They can also indulge in full makeup application.

“I recently met with a Diva on her day at Mancini-Giuffre who was a bundle of nerves when she arrived because she’d had some tests a few days before and was waiting for the results,” Christina shared. “I left her in the kind and capable hands of the salon staff and she was put totally at ease as her day progressed.

“A few days later I was thrilled to receive her simple text, ‘In remission!’ I broke down and cried with relief for her. In her moment of private joy, she had taken the time and thought to tell me, of all people! That meant so much to me and reinforced the reason I am involved with this organization.”

Not only does Diva for a Day pamper these brave women, but the program also treats them to lunch brought into the salon from a local restaurant. Currently, Zio Toto provides lunch at Mancini-Giuffre and Brioso’s at AF Bennett, after which the women are presented with beautiful bouquets donated by Carroll’s Florist and Forever Yours of Annadale.

“All services, lunches and flowers are provided at no cost,” Christina added. “The salon staff members are all very kind and considerate. They go out of their way to accommodate the schedule and needs of each woman they host.”

Salon to “Blow Out” Breast Cancer

A New Dorp hair salon is doing its part to help “blow out” breast cancer.
A-F Bennett will be offering wash-and-style appointments for 25-dollars on October 27th. Half of the proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society.
Customers will also receive a gift and 20-percent off their next appointment. The salon is also offering other promotional services throughout the month for breast cancer awareness.
“We’re also advocating and making sure that these individuals are able to get the help they need and more importantly find a cure,” said Salon Owner Frank Bennett.

AF Bennett’s annual Prom Runway Show was once again a huge success. The setting included Partners in Sound keeping the energy high playing the best songs of 2014/2015 while delicious cupcakes by Allie Maresca were served with refreshments throughout the night. This year we featured a masquerade theme where each of our 20 selected models from different high schools across Staten Island, donned their favorite mystery mask and walked the runway showcasing an Ivory & Company 2015 Gown with both their hair styled to perfection and flawless HD makeup perfected by the A.F. Bennett Team. At the culmination of the event, AF Bennett was happy to raffle off a $1200 Big Sexy Hair Basket which included Big Sexy products, a Salon Tech Blow Dryer, an Enzo Curling Wand, and a free Spray Tanning membership.

All guests received a complimentary gift bag with skin and hair care products plus so much more & each attendee received 20% off their Prom appointment!

Girls Night Out 2014 at A.F. Bennett

It was a day full of beauty, bonding, friendship and fun for Melissa Eger, the winner of A.F. Bennett’s Ultimate Girls Night Out contest, and three of her closest friends, Sharon, Giovanna and Michelle. On Saturday, August 9 ^th , the highly anticipated first Ultimate Girls Night Out celebration took place. The four girls were gifted with a day that they would remember for many years to come, and there were photographers documenting the entire experience.

The four beauties arrived at A.F. Bennett in the early afternoon, eagerly awaiting what was in store. Frank Bennett and the girls’ personal beauty team greeted them at the door. They began their spa day with champagne in A.F. Bennett’s luxurious relaxation room, celebrating their victory and toasting to a day in which they would leave their typical stressors behind and relish in relaxation and cherished moments with dear friends.

They then parted ways to indulge in A.F. Bennett Red Carpet Radiance Facials which focus on brightening, hydrating and restoring lost collagen to the skin. Melissa and her friends emerged fresh-faced and gloriously glowing before moving on to A.F Bennett Spa Pedicures. They each retreated to their own private room where they sank into a large plush couch and reveled in the ultimate treat for their feet.

It was then time to switch gears and get glammed up for the night ahead. The girls got shampooed and prepped for A.F. Bennett blowouts. They stole the show and captured the attention of everyone around them who wanted to pose for a photo with the gorgeous girls.
